Client – Allied Irish Bank
Project – Strategic Energy Management, ISO 50001 Energy Management System
About the Client – Allied Irish Bank (AIB) are the largest financial services organisation in Ireland and also having significant operations in the UK through their subsidiaries AIB Group UK and First Trust Bank. AIB employ approximately 11,000 personnel across an extensive branch network. AIB are committed to reducing their environmental impact as part of their progressive CSR initiatives.
AIB’s Needs – AIB had identified the ability to manage energy in a more systematic and structural manner as being an ongoing challenge and were keen to adopt a recognised international best practice approach to overcome this challenge while also integrating with organisational sustainability, environmental and corporate social responsibility objectives. This would also align with an increased corporate focus on “green” financing and lending for energy and environmental sectors.
What Energy Services Did – Energy Services developed an energy management strategy for AIB and then implemented an energy management system to ISO 50001. The energy management system was initially implemented at AIB’s 80,000m2 HQ, home to some 4,000 staff on a daily basis, and then subsequently across the organisation. AIB had a diverse range of energy uses, including, HVAC, IT data centre, thermal heating, cogeneration, and general services. Our approach was to focus on systems optimisation, BMS optimisation, training in operational control and awareness, energy efficient design and retro commissioning. The ISO 50001 energy management system was integrated with the environmental management system (ISO 14001) to form an integrated energy and environmental management system.
The Results –
- AIB achieved a 27% reduction in energy consumption in the first year.
- Seamlessly integrated organisational management systems incorporating Energy (ISO 50001) and Environment (ISO 14001).
- Organisation wide roll out of the energy management system is ongoing.
- AIB named green large organisation of the year at the year 2015, and the AIB energy services team was named the Sustainability Team of the Year in 2016.
