About the Client – The client was a leading global airline providing commercial aviation services through a hub and spoke network to over 150 destinations around the world. The company has an airline fleet of over 180 in operation and continues to expand.
Client Needs – The commercial aviation sector is a continually evolving one with budgetary, competition, environmental, and regulatory compliance in particular presenting significant challenges. The clients’ needs focused on environmental and climate change regulatory compliance and in the process improving upon energy and environmental management capabilities. The client also wanted to be able to better measure and track energy performance and measure how impactful fuel optimisation measures were on the aviation fleet.
What Energy Services Did – Energy Services conducted a detailed energy modelling and energy auditing programme focused on aviation fuel use. An extensive range of data was analysed as part of the energy modelling scope, including; aviation fuel use, flight distance, flight time, passenger numbers, cargo weight, aircraft weight, fuel burn x block hour. The modelling approach was aligned with ISO 50001, where multivariate linear regression models were developed to form an energy baseline for each aircraft type in the fleet. The models enable the airline to measure and track energy, environmental and cost performance down to the individual aircraft flight level by determining the actual versus expected energy consumption, thereby enabling a much higher degree of operational control and visualisation of the impact of ongoing fuel optimisation measures. In addition to the improved operational control, the energy auditing programme identified a range of energy saving opportunities in the aviation fleet.
