Client – Irish Police Force
Project – Strategic Energy Management, ISO 50001 Energy Management System
About the Client – An Garda Síochána (AGS) is the national police service of Ireland. Headquartered in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, AGS employ approximately 14,500 police officers and Civilian employees in Ireland, who serve all sections of the community.
AGS Needs – AGS utilise a diverse range of energy uses throughout their organisation, the most significant of these being transport and buildings related. An extensive geographical footprint, significant staff numbers, a large transport fleet and budgetary pressures present significant ongoing challenges to AGS in terms of managing energy use and improving energy performance. As a public sector organisation in Ireland, AGS are mandated to improve energy performance by 33% by 2020 and this was one of the key drivers behind the decision to adopt a more strategic and structured approach to managing energy throughout the organisation. AGS were keen to demonstrate leadership in the public sector, not just in Ireland but also internationally.
What Energy Services Did – Energy Services developed an energy management strategy for AGS and then implemented an energy management system to ISO 50001. The energy management system was initially implemented at AGS 19-acre HQ facility and also covered the organisations transport fleet. The focus was on transport as the most significant energy use and a number of initiatives were implemented, including; fuel switching, improved aerodynamics, driver training and education, and integration of energy efficiency as a key consideration in fleet procurement. Building energy initiatives included BMS optimisation, training and awareness on operational control, low cost technology upgrades, and cooling systems optimisation and retro commissioning. The energy management programme is being rolled out across the organisation.
The Results –
- AGS are the first police force in the world to achieve ISO 50001 certification for energy management.
- AGS have achieved savings of 30% in energy consumption.
- Organisation wide roll out of the energy management system is ongoing.
- AGS are well on their way to achieving their mandatory public sector energy reduction targets.
